What is Spyware?

If you cruise the internet and download programs and files without knowing about spyware you are quite likely to have an infected computer. There may be no sign of the infection or there may be many annoying signs: pop-up ads, browser hijackings, slow loading of pages; you may even find mysterious charges on your phone bill or credit cards. Some people think that cookies are spyware and should always be avoided. Most cookies are harmless and make using the internet easier - for logins on sites where you have an account for example, or the cookie that keeps track of what you add to a shopping cart when shopping online. The cookie that opens your email account when you type in your password is one you probably don't mind having. Cookies are usually small harmless text files that make the internet easier to use - but not always.

There are other types of files that can get onto your system and they are not so harmless. They keep track of where you go and what sites you visit, what ads you click on and report back on your activity without your knowledge. Other malicious files come in hidden with downloads of online music, amusements and games. Some are downloaded disguised as "Toolbars" or "Helpers", even little Smilies for your email. Some of these files can even track every letter and number you type and send it secretly back to another computer. Sometimes these malware browser bars and hidden program files cause annoying pop-up ads and even take you to visit sites that you do not want to visit. The internet is a wonderful place full of fun and interesting people and places but there are some who use the internet for malicious purposes and we need to be ready when we run into them. Just learning about spyware puts you one step ahead but since it doesn't come with warning signs, just knowing about it won't protect you. First you should find out what kind of spyware is already on your system. Nearly everyone has some form of spyware even page counters are a minor form of spyware. Other, more harmful files can be hidden on your sytem without your knowledge and you can find out what they are and how to get rid of them at no cost to you. Two files were quarantined from my system on Nov.10 (2007) and I am *Very* careful about my online activity! Spyware can happen to anyone.

PC Tools celebrates 100 million downloads of Spyware Doctor

PC Tools World Of Security

San Francisco, June 12, 2007 - Leading Internet security software vendor PC Tools has just achieved a product milestone on the third anniversary of the Spyware Doctor launch - generating 100 million website downloads of its multi-award winning anti-spyware tool, Spyware Doctor, since the product was launched in June 2004.

"This is a key moment in PC Tools' history as we embark on a new development phase - assembling powerful technology to combat zero-hour threats and creating new approaches to combat malware," said Simon Clausen, CEO of PC Tools. "Our success in part comes from our consumer-based approach, which is to provide users with powerful, easy-to-use tools to combat emerging threats."

"The fact that 100 million users have chosen to download PC Tools' Spyware Doctor is a testament to PC Tools' innovative and easy to use software design," said Clausen. "The new Spyware Doctor reflects the best-of- breed-approach that PC Tools has taken in producing all of its products and consumers have been very receptive to this," Clausen added.

PC Tools, which recently announced the acquisition of Cyberhawk™ from Colorado-based Novatix Corporation and the establishment of a new advanced research office in Boulder, is strategically positioning itself as a leader in the Internet security space.

"Consumers will soon be able to witness the advantages of the new capabilities PC Tools have acquired such as Cyberhawk™, which is a best-of-breed behavioural detection technology. This will allow PC Tools to continue to detect more malware than our competitors," said Clausen.

Clausen explained that PC Tools' success is based on the quality of employees it continues to attract and the high standards PC Tools continues to maintain. "We believe in building a strong company by hiring exceptional people and supporting their efforts. The last three years have certainly been exciting and rewarding. We expect the next three to be even more so."

PC Tools vindicated in Zango lawsuit

San Francisco, 28th August 2007: Controversial adware publisher Zango today conceded defeat by voluntarily withdrawing its proceedings against anti-spyware maker PC Tools. This news follows the courts denial of Zango’s application for a Temporary Restraining Order in June 2007. While Zango’s legal proceedings have sought to remove the detection of their products by PC Tools’ anti-spyware application, Spyware Doctor, the Court found in June of this year that it was “unlikely that the Plaintiff will be able to prove that the Defendant’s software was unfair or deceptive...”. “It appears that Zango has realised they were not going to prevail in this matter and the case has been withdrawn on this basis” said Simon Clausen, Chief Executive Officer, PC Tools. “We believe the case should not have been brought in the first place. The outcome sends a strong message that PC Tools will not be changing their classification of programs as a result of the threat of legal proceedings.” “It is our responsibility to provide consumers with an effective anti-malware product. PC Tools will continue to be vigilant in classifying potential threats and expend whatever resources are necessary to protect its brand and reputation,” said Clausen.
